AP stat prep

Currently, I am involved in advanced statistic class, which undergo intense practice and preparation for the Ap test. The AP test is hard and stressful that’s why we need to prepare for it. In this statistic class is probably my most challenging class all year because it is consist of many subjects and hard vocabularies to understand the context. So far I have learned about univariable and bivariable data, also the different way to place the different type of data into form and organize for easy interpret the data. That includes scatterplot, bar graph, box plot, histogram and many other. Currently, I am studying about the line of predicted data and the real data. If you have data on something you can predict a new outcome from the line. For example height and weight, predict height based on weight, if you are 80 kg the graph shows that your height would be around 180cm.

Coding

In our last round of fourth-year exploration, I was selected to be in an exploration which is trying to create a game that will be related to economic. For the 7 weeks before the exploration start, I have to join an expertise(an afternoon class usually from 1 – 2 pm) with a teacher from Poland. We learned many things such Github access code and javascript. All of the learning is for the exploration which will be a focus on creating an economic game. The focus code was javascript but there other code needed to implement for site development. Those codes are HTML, CSS, and other displayed based codes. These codes were discovered using my own time to progress for faster as other students. Click on the image below to pay the economic game.

Local Library

Every day, people start to get the electronic device. Lots of people now have forgotten the use of the book and how it important. So one day my friend and I come up with an idea of library everywhere and we call our project “Local Library”. This project will solve the problem of lack of resource of knowledge to the rural part of Cambodia. provide them the fundamental practice of learning through reading. We work really hard to create the library box which will last long and resistance to the changing weather.  We also fund-raise and ask for book new or old from libraries in Cambodia. Luckily there are few of the library and NGO who are willing to donate books but they are all English, so the needed Khmer books we bought it from a store. Once we have the book and library box finish we start to test the program by sending each member of the team to there province with the library box.

Members of the project; Visal, Mengthong, Niroth and Seyha(me).

Members come together to choose plans for the libraries design. We sketch new design and model to fit our interest.

Students help to complete the creation of libraries.

Description: Students will work closely with community to solve their waste management and how to make use from it. In class students will learn about the effect of waste to living things on the earth, and find solutions to motivate community to care more about environment. In order to achieve this goal, students will do survey in the community to see what are the real problems in the village which is near our school. Then students will do field trip to interview people from Ministry of Environment and waste collecting company names CINTRI. Students will do Community Project Based which means they will collaborate with community to separate their waste into three kind as in Organic, Recycle, and Others. Through these, community not only benefits for their environment, but also improve their living by making compost.

STEM Exploration

Our Exploration was responding to the ministry of education order of introducing STEM to the government school. We were working with two schools called Kratie Krong High School and Chbar Om Pov High School. We were experimenting and implementing STEM project into high school. We chose two topics basically from their book and create the projects. We chose Potential energy and Kinetic energy(from physic) and the other one is Plants biology. The physic project is requiring the student to create a model that show and explain the science of it. For biology, the students are needed to choose plants and research how it affect Cambodian life and culture, also the science behind. The Project Based-Learning and we made 4 other presentations that explain the idea of having this project and the characteristic we want them to do when they’re doing the projects we made. Turn out there is some teacher who has accepted the project but some teacher still resist.

Presenting to the teachers in Kratie about the project-learning program for students’ practice.

Camping on the sand experience.
Cooking own food while camping.
Students of the Kratie School present there product and what they have learned.

Tropical Forest Ecology Description

Name: Tropical Forest Ecology

Date: May 5 2014 – June 17 2014

Number of People: 12

Essential Questions:

  1. How are organisms and the nonliving environment interconnected in the world around us?
  2.  What is the value of tropical forest ecosystems for Cambodia?
  3. How do humans impact tropical forest ecosystems in Cambodia? Is it possible to use tropical forests sustainably?

Description: In Tropical Forest Ecology we learned about Ecosystems. Ecosystems are a community of organisms that are interconnected and connected with non-living things. We went on two trips because we wanted to experience and see forest directly. We went to Preah Vihear and Koh Kong provinces. When we came back we compared the dry deciduous dipterocarp forest ecosystem (Preah Vihear province) with the evergreen forest ecosystem (Koh Kong province). In Preah Vihear we went to Tmatboey community and in Koh Kong we went to Chi Phat community. We learned about conservation. Conservation means taking care or protecting something. While we learned about conservation, we also learned about sustainable and unsustainable. Sustainable is the action that does not destroy the ecosystem. Unsustainable is the action that destroys the ecosystem. We learned about ecotourism. Ecotourism is tourism that uses and benefits the ecosystem. That is one way that we use ecosystems sustainably. Also we learned about ecological services. Ecological services are the benefits that people get from ecosystems. There are three ecological services such as provisioning services, regulating services and cultural services. Provisioning services are how the ecosystem provides us directly. Ex: Trees give us resin. Regulating services are how the ecosystem regulates the climate. Ex: Trees stop the floods by absorbing the water. Cultural services are how the ecosystems give us something culturally. Ex: Bambuti people use forest plants to smoke for their ceremonies.  We answered our essential questions by using the knowledge that we got from our trips.

Asian Politics Description

Name of Course: Asian Politics

Learning Facilitator: Kimchhel

Number of Students : 9

Dates: March 30 – June 12

Course Description: In our class we studied about the countries that joined ASEAN. First teacher wrote the names of the countries on pieces of paper. Then each student did the lucky draw to pick the country that they needed to research. When we got enough information we created the presentation on Prezi, Google Presentation or OneNote. After three weeks of doing the research we started to present about the country that we did research about. We talked about the flag, land and population, religion, GDP and some other things. We did some comparisons between some countries to Cambodia. For example in 2003 Cambodia is having more trade freedom than thailand but in 2014 thailand is having more trade freedom than Cambodia. Another example is in 2005 Laos having more trade freedom than Cambodia but in 2014 Cambodia is having more trade freedom than Cambodia.  After everyone did their presentation the teacher introduced more about ASEAN politics. The categories that he taught us were political systems (ex. communism and democracy), the start of ASEAN (why ASEAN started), the history of ASEAN countries (revolution from some powerful countries) and so on. ASEAN started because two reasons. One is because to prevent from war (island conflict) and another reason because to block communist influence (Cold War). In about 19th century France there was a revolution to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and more but not Thailand because they talked with England that Thailand is the border of the country that they do the revolution on. Moreover teacher also taught us that ASEAN divided into two parts. One is Indochina (Thailand, Burma) and another one is Malaysia (island country).

Algebra A Description

Name of Course: Algebra A

Learning Facilitator: Jeff Boucher

Number of Students: 14

Dates: August 8 – January 16

Days we Meet: Monday – Tuesday

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment we learned about Math. This Advanced Enrichment lasted really long and the students had a really hard time working on that. We learned the hard math by learning it step by step. There are many clever students in this class and all of them are very patient. Every day in our class the math got harder and harder but we got smarter as the time kept going. Sometimes we realized that the math that we had learned could be used in real life. The important things that we learned for the whole year were negative numbers, the Greatest Common Factors, linear equations, y=mx+b form or Slope-interception, parabolas, Quadratic formula/equation, etc. All of these math sections were very hard. It is something that people will think that it is hard because they did not try yet and for those people who try they will think it is easy. But for us here we do not think it was hard or easy we were just trying our best.

Scratch Description

Name of Course:  Scratch

Learning Facilitator: Max

Number of Students: 13

Advanced Enrichment Dates: August 12-Oct 17

Days we Meet: Thursday and Friday

Course Description: In our Advanced Enrichment class we learned how to program in Scratch. Scratch is a program for making continuous animation, games, simulation, music and art. This program uses custom programming language. We learned each category of custom programming language: Motion, Control, Looks, Sensing, Sounds and Pen. Motion is moving custom program. Control is controlling custom program, for example when we click right arrow the avatar go to right. Looks is size, avatar, and communicating custom program. Sensing is sensor custom program, for example when we touch color black the avatar turn to black. Sounds is sounds custom program, for example when we press space avatar say hello. Pen is coloring custom program. We learned what the categories mean and we translated in Khmer to make more understand and remember. We played with the program to change the color to make it big. We thought what story we were going to make. Then we made the stories in Scratch. Also some of us made the games. When we had some of questions we asked teacher or our friends to help. We played with makey makey that connects to Scratch. One example of a game we made is when we touch the Earth material that connects to makey makey and the makey makey connects to computer. The computer plays the sounds.
